Using our Apple TV

We went to the pet store today and took our IPAD to record our visit.  We took some time this afternoon to discuss while looking at our pictures on the Apple TV.

Technology & Word Wall

The students in FDK used loose materials found in the class and nature to create the letters of the alphabet. They took pictures of their letters with the IPad and they were displayed in the room to create our Word Wall.

Using Book Creator App at parent/teacher interviews

Last night we used our IPAD at interviews.  This student created a book of learning pictures and shared them with his Mother.  It was a great way to involve the child in the interview process and to show off the technology in our classroom.

A snapshot of our Halloween master pieces!!!

Collecting Data

We are learning how to take a survey and organize our data in a neat and organized table with proper titles and labels! Once we master this we will learn how to 'Display' our results.

Learning to take a picture with the IPad!

We have been learning how to take a great picture with the iPad. The students decided success criteria. 1. Pick a subject
             2. Line up the subject in the middle of screen
             3. Do not Hold the iPad too close or too far away from the subject
             4. Hold the iPad still or the picture will be fuzzy

Asking to provide feedback

Today the boys asked if I could take a picture of their creation and put it up on the Smartboard so we could talk about it.  I would say that means that the IPAD and Apple TV are really helping with feedback and the students are taking notice!

'Tent Celebration Success'

On Thursday our tent celebration was a success. A special thank you to Father Stan for coming over to join us! The students were very excited, and despite the 'very windy weather' our structure held together!

FIRST BLOG EVER!

Hi everyone. We have been using our iPad to capture our learning as it happens.  For example, in Science the students have been able to share the process they follow with other groups while they are conducting their experiments (once I figure out how to upload the pics onto this blog I will). It's so exciting for the students to receive peer feedback from others while they are exploring.  This type of sharing of information allows the students to alter their exploration if needed.

Exploring Pic Collage

Today we spent some time exploring 'Pic Collage,' in class. The kids caught on really fast and were making some collages about themselves. They also used 'AirPlay' for the first time, and had fun showing their creations to the class.

Got to Love Structures!

In class right now we are investigating structures. What better way to investigate then to put up a tent together! We are going to put it up again on Thursday to celebrate our first "Tent Meeting" of the year. Just like Moses we are going to gather in a 'modern tent' sort of speak for our own little prayer service on 'Charity." The students have been working hard to prepare music, decorations, prayers and bible readings for our 'Tent Meeting'...let's hope Mother Nature is on our side! If not....oh well...the elements of nature will just add to some deeper connections of building strong, stable and durable structures!

You CAN teach an old dog new tricks....

I joined the I-phone generation.  I am not one of those who stands in line for the "newest thing". Quite the contrary. However, my cell phone recharging cord got lost in the move and I  went to buy a new power cord. The girl looked at the input plug and told me the company didn't even make that  kind of cord anymore.  I knew it was time to take the plunge. Nervously, I signed my life over and gingerly took the new iphone in my hand. I was quite nervous that I wouldn't know how to use it so it was a great relief to find this was just like the Ipod I use in class that we got from the last Math Inquiry initiative! Camera roll? check... Settings wheel? check... Calculator? Check... I'm not sure if I can figure out how to make an actual phone call on the thing, but if I need to capture an image of someone's math thinking and project it to my smartboard, I may have another device in my purse that I can use in Math tomorrow! :)

Ordering and Comparing Numbers

Today in math I set up stations around the classroom where students had to represent, order and compare both two and three digit numbers. It was nice to see them trying different things out and pushing their understanding of things. It proved to be a great opportunity for me to sit back and make some observations as students explored the different work stations, as well as an opportunity for me to offer feedback and remedial support to some of those students having difficulty with some of the concepts. I was able to use my google form I created to document notes and make observations in relation to our current learning goals. I was also able to take some photos of some of the work produced. Going to take some video tomorrow as they continue to explore. Awesome day!

Searching For Structures Using Google Images

This week the grade 2/3 class has been learning how to use google to find pictures of structures around the world. After two periods of searching the students air dropped all their pictures to my iPad, we printed them and are now using them to fill our our tables. Can't believe how fast they are catching on! Next step....using google to research information about a famous structure in the world.

Using Technology to enhance our practice!

Since we began our TLLP project, my partner Julie and I have been experimenting with using technology to enhance our practice.  We specifically want to see how we can use the technology to help the students in our room to explain their learning, reflect on their work and give self and peer feedback.
Yesterday we used our iPad and Apple TV to post some pictures of the student's learning throughout the day. The students were then given the opportunity to talk about their learning, make connections, ask questions and give feedback.
We were pleased with  the result and look forward to seeing where this technology will lead us!

Techie Tuesday Summary

Thanks to those who came out for our first ever Techie Tuesday at St. Mary's. Hopefully you learned something new. Things we looked at today included:

  • Disabling Restrictions
  • Setting up a passcode to protect iPad
  • Learning how to lock the rotation or sound
  • Setting up email and linking it to the iPad
  • Composing / Filing / Deleting emails
  • How to take and view a photo / video
  • Uploading a photo- Email, Air Drop, AirPlay with the Apple TV
The only thing we didn't get to was how to download free Apps. We will cover this next week. Use the handout in case you forget something, or just come visit me and I would be more than willing to help.

Thank you Grant for your help and use of your room! AirPlay and Air Drop could prove quite interesting this year! If anyone took any good pics of people working while exploring the camera, feel free to Air Drop them to me so I can post them on our blog...or post them yourself!

Looking forward to more Techie Tuesdays! Thanks for being interested in learning!

Testing!

First Air Drop = Success

Today in math class the grade 3s used air drop for the first time to share their work with me. I couldn't believe how fast they caught on. We are currently learning how to represent numbers to 1000. We started with a simple 2 digit number of 41. After exploring all the different ways we could represent a number, they had to choose 4-5 different ways to represent 41. They then had to take a picture of their work with one of the class iPads and airdrop their photos to me so I could file their work electronically. It went really well! Can't wait to talk about these tomorrow and have the students give some feedback to each other, before we dive into some bigger 3-digit numbers.

Creating a Google Form

Thank you to all of those who stayed behind on Thursday to check out how to make a Google Form for the purpose of tracking observations of student learning in the classroom. I know it was really fast, so here is a video I made that you can follow along to help you set up your classes for the year. ~Liz~

Rolling Out the TLLP Plan- Preparing the Technology

Spent the last few days at school getting iPads ready and set up for 2014-2015 school year. Great team work in putting those new carts together. Teacher iPads are charging and ready for introduction to the project at our Thursday staff meeting. Just waiting on the assessment aps iDoceo and Book Creator to be pushed out, as well as power chargers so we can get to work. Looking forward to rolling out this TLLP with my students on Tuesday! So exciting!
